Point of View

I have another question for the writers…

How do you know what point of view to use when you begin a novel length work? (or do you?)

I ask this, because, as some of you know, my last novel I used the first person, then between the 2nd and 3rd drafts, went through and changed the ENTIRE THING to third person. (in order to add a second story line) I have begun plans for another, unrelated novel, and don’t want to go through all of that again!!

  1. Honestly, I have no idea. I’m still in the process of flipping a novel from past tense to present. If you ever find a magic way to know the correct POV, please let me in on this 🙂

  2. Hi Sandra,

Decide exactly what you want to convey in your writing…which character’s voice best tells that…do you feel comfortable narrating the events from the first person (a more personal voice)? Or would you rather keep a distance by using the third person?

You can also experiment. Many writers today use first person and third in a single novel.

All the best with your writing.
